About the Program

Across the globe, small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS; under 55 lbs.) are rapidly transforming businesses and industries as we know them. From individual enthusiasts to major corporations, sUAS users are striving to harness the power of these systems, while keeping up with the industry’s ever-evolving technology and legal regulations. That’s why Embry-Riddle Worldwide created the professional program in small unmanned aircraft systems.

Consisting of three online courses, this non-degree program features the history and design of unmanned aircraft systems, delving into how industries across the board are using them now. Students explore today’s most innovative and exciting sUAS applications, from preventing wildlife poaching to filming blockbusters. They also learn about operating sUAS safely and legally, for both professional and recreational purposes. Most importantly, students connect with resources to help them stay current on this quickly changing industry.

Note: This non-degree program does not substitute for a license, degree, certification or required professional credential. A certificate of completion is issued upon successful completion of all three courses.

NEW Requirement: A certificate of completion is issued upon successful completion of three sUAS professional courses. Starting in January 2018 for participants who have not completed the three courses, participants can choose two courses from this program and substitute any other available ERAU online SUAS professional course to receive the certificate of completion. Participants who are seeking a certificate of completion must complete two of three courses, selecting from SUAS 1000, 1100 and 1200 and select one more course from SUAS 1300, SUAS 1400, SUAS 1500, SUAS 6000 or SUAS 2000. Courses where a certificate has already been issued for that individual course or as part of another certificate cannot be used towards completion
of a certificate for the professional program.

About the Instructors

Courses may be taught by any of the following instructors:

  • Dr. Tim Holt is an Associate Professor of Aeronautical Science and Program Chair for the Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University - Prescott Campus, Department of Applied Aviation Sciences within the College of Aviation. He holds a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Northcentral University, a Master of Aeronautical Science and Bachelor of Science in Professional Aeronautics from Embry-Riddle. He has more than 22 years of flying experience as a Naval Aviator, serving as both an instructor and evaluator. 
  • Brad Opp is an Adjunct Instructor, Course Monitor and Course Developer for the College of Aeronautics at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University - Worldwide. He holds a Master of Aeronautical Science from Embry-Riddle, a master's degree in Military Operational Art and Science from Air University and a Bachelor of Science in General Engineering from the United States Air Force Academy. He has more than 18 years of flying experience as a trainer, fighter and unmanned pilot.
  • Dr. Brent Terwilliger, the developer of this three-course program, is an Assistant Professor of Aeronautics and Program Chair for the Master of Science in Unmanned Systems in the College of Aeronautics at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University - Worldwide. He holds a Ph.D. in Business Administration from Northcentral University, a Master of Aeronautical Science and Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Studies from Embry-Riddle. Additionally, he spent more than a decade working in defense contracting.
