Overview

This course is an awareness program designed for pilots, aircrew and ground support personnel on understanding the flying environment encountered by helicopter landing officers, necessary precautions for ground crew and its dangers. This course not only covers relevant details on the role of a landing officer and specific procedures, but it also looks at obstacle awareness within this environment and various scenarios that a landing officer may encounter.

Course Objectives

  • Understand the various types of medical and rescue helicopters used globally, their identification features, general capabilities and specifications
  • Understand why there is a diversity of different types of helicopters used in Helicopter EMS (HEMS) operations
  • Understand the role of a Helicopter Landing Officer in a public safety environment
  • Understand how a medical helicopter is dispatched to the scene of an incident
  • Identify and understand some of the elements of the environment that we live in that provide challenges to a helicopter Medevac response to the scene of an incident
  • Have the knowledge and ability to select a suitable and safe landing zone for a variety of different helicopter types at the scene of any incident
  • Knowledge, understanding and skills to communicate effectively by use of hand signals and radio communications with the helicopter flight crew
  • Understand how to apply the knowledge and procedures of daytime helicopter landing operations to night operations
