Over the past few years, ERAU-OPE has been working hard to provide the aerospace industry with a path that will allow their Aerospace Coatings Applicator Specialists to obtain a formal, accredited technical certification. The training and certification program for aircraft paint personnel conforms to the recently published SAE specification AS7489, which defines the requirements necessary to properly train and certify ACAS personnel to an industry-recognized standard.

Q & A

Why is a formal certification program for ACAS personnel important?

There are many reasons why verifying the knowledge, skills, and abilities of aircraft paint personnel is important. Here are a few:

Paint Process Accountability. When ACAS personnel are properly trained and certified to an internationally-recognized, industry standard, then they become accountable for the work that they perform per the credentials they have earned. When you hire a certified ACAS, you are doing so with the peace of mind that he or she knows what they are doing and perhaps more importantly, why they are doing it a specific way.

Safety of Flight. There is a direct relationship between structural failures that occur on an aircraft, and the methods used to apply the protective coatings, that prevent corrosion and other sources of airframe fatigue. A properly trained ACAS knows the ways to mitigate the causes of corrosion and other structural failures associated with the paint process. Certification verifies that they know how to distinguish sound processing techniques from those that can potentially create a safety-of-flight issue.

Reduced Operational Cost.
Certified ACAS personnel know what the root causes of coatings failures consist of. As a result they are cognizant of how to avoid the type of quality escapes that create rework, generate warranty claims, and yield customer satisfaction issues. How does the training and certification process work?

ERAU-OPE offers the training in three main venues:

Online: A six-week self-guided training program that teaches the basic “Course I” requirements per AS7489. The certification of completion from ERAU-OPE serves as proof of formal certification to this requirement because there is no practical examination requirement. This is a great course for not only ACAS personnel, but also for any support roles that want to achieve a better understanding of the Aircraft Paint process. Highly recommended for aerospace paint supervisors, managers, and process engineering roles.

Eagle Vision: Specific Aerospace Coatings training blocks that conform to the Course requirements outlined in AS7489. This option features a live instructor that directly interacts with students, in real time, to teach the theory associated with the aircraft coatings process. Courses are offered in one-week modules and consist of a total of (20) hours of class time. The course schedule is designed to be flexible and there is a minimum two-week lead time upon enrolling with the Office of Professional Education.

Instructor-led: If your organization desires an instructor to be dispatched to your facility to teach the courses outlines in AS7489, ERAU-OPE can now accommodate your request. The Instructor is an industry expert that will facilitate both the classroom and practical portions of the training. Hands-on training requirements can be met using scrap material or in conjunction with your regular production schedule. Please contact ERAU-OPE for lead time and class size requirements. Typically, there is a (6) student minimum and a 30 day lead time associated with this offering.

  • Define surface energy as it relates to aerospace substrates and coatings.
  • Evaluate common forms of corrosion & measures of prevention.
  • Understand dissimilar metal theory.

Primers, Paint and Corrosion Resistance

  • Identify and label Primer Systems

  • Review and Recall tools for priming

  • Identify a Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) where to they found, how they are used, and what the content consists of.
  • Identify Modern Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and its proper use.
  • Define the terms Ergonomics and Preserving Range of Motion.
